The Instruments
Most of our stuff is from Java. Traditional definitely, though we have
found ways to not worry about that. It's a high quality bronze gamelan
that takes a pretty hefty beating from us. Given that "gamel" means "to
strike or beat", it would appear that we are doing something right here.
The traditional names of the instruments are
things like demung, slentem, saron, bonang, kempul, and, you got it, gong.
Everyone's heard of that one. We also have small traditional instruments
like kemanak, though we call that one a "woo-woo" because that's what
it sounds like to us.
We have a kitchen sink approach to our instruments
since we are willing to add whatever suits our bent of the moment. Our
guitar player users an electric lapsteel that is older than any of our
members, meaning it is very ancient. We also have some African bells and
rattles and, if it pleases us, we use them too.
As with any musicians we love our instruments and carry pictures of them in our respective wallets. Below, for your entertainment and greater knowledge are thumbnails images. Click on any one of them and a pop up window will appear with a delightful picture and some illuminating text:
